What Are Implant Dentures?

Implant dentures combine the stability of dental implants with the full-arch restoration of dentures. Unlike traditional dentures that rest on the gums, implant dentures use small titanium posts placed in the jawbone to act as artificial tooth roots. This not only secures your denture but also prevents bone loss, helping to maintain your facial structure.

There are two types of implant dentures to consider:

Fixed/Permanent Implant Dentures

Sometimes called a hybrid prosthesis, this type of denture is secured with 4–6 implants and cannot be removed at home. It requires sufficient jawbone density for long-term support and offers the most natural feel and function, closely resembling real teeth.

Removable Implant Dentures

Also known as “Snap-On dentures”, these use 2–5 implants and attach via a bar- or ball-retained device. They’re easier to remove for cleaning and are ideal for patients with less jawbone density who may not qualify for a fixed denture.

The Implant Denture Procedure

The process of getting implant dentures takes several months but delivers life-changing results. Our practice handles the entire process in-house, eliminating the need to visit multiple specialists. Here’s what to expect:

  • Consultation & Evaluation – We assess your oral health, discuss your goals, and determine if any preliminary treatments (i.e., bone grafting, gum disease treatment) are necessary.
  • Implant Surgery – Under local anesthesia, we place the implants into your jawbone.
  • Healing & Osseointegration – Over 3–6 months, the implants fuse with the bone to create a stable foundation.
  • Abutment Placement – Once healed, small connectors (abutments) are attached to the implants.
  • Denture Attachment – Your custom denture is secured in place, restoring your complete, confident smile.

Am I a Candidate for Implant Dentures?

Most adults with missing teeth can qualify for implant dentures, but a consultation is necessary to confirm eligibility. Factors we evaluate include:

  • Gum Health – If gum disease is present, treatment is required before implant placement.
  • Overall Health – Candidates should be in good general health and able to undergo minor oral surgery.
  • Jawbone Density – Sufficient bone is needed for fixed dentures, but if you have bone loss, removable dentures or bone grafting may be options.

Benefits of Combining Dentures & Dental Implants

Combining dental implants with dentures offers unique advantages over traditional solutions. You can look forward to long-term cost savings as fewer adjustments and replacements are necessary compared to standard dentures. Because dental implants are inserted into the jawbone, they help prevent bone loss and maintain facial structure. Additionally, there’s a lower risk of systemic health issues linked to tooth loss.
